Who provides the care

Every direct-care staff member completes pre-service training in first aid, CPR, infection control, dementia care, abuse and neglect reporting, medication administration and resident rights before any unsupervised contact with a resident.

All staff clear Virginia State Police criminal background checks and Adult and Child Protective Services registry checks before they are hired, and hold a current negative TB screening.

Direct-care staff complete a minimum of fourteen hours of continuing education a year. Staff working in the memory care environment complete six hours of dementia-specific training before unsupervised resident contact, and four hours more each year.

Final service scope for each resident is set by a Uniform Assessment Instrument (UAI) evaluation and by our licensing parameters.

Staffing

Around the clock, not on call

The house is staffed continuously. Specific staffing levels for each shift are confirmed with families during a consultation, once a resident's assessed needs are known.

Day

7:00am – 3:00pm

The busiest hours — personal care, breakfast and lunch, and the morning and afternoon programmes.

Evening

3:00pm – 11:00pm

Dinner at one table, the evening activity, and settling for the night at each resident's own pace.

Overnight

11:00pm – 7:00am

Awake overnight coverage, with checks and assistance available at any hour.

The team

The team is five caregivers, a part-time cook and housekeeper, and an activity coordinator role held within the caregiving team. Clinical care is directed by our Director of Nursing; day-to-day operations by a licensed Administrator.

Someone is always here

A member of the care team is on site twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, with awake coverage overnight. The house is never left unattended, and there is never a period when a resident would need to wait for someone to arrive.

Medication

How medication is handled

Medication is the single most common source of avoidable harm in residential care. Here is exactly how it is handled.

Who may give it
Only a licensed nurse, a Registered Medication Aide certified by the Virginia Board of Nursing, or the resident themselves where assessed as capable.
How it is stored
A locked medication cabinet. Controlled substances under a second lock. Refrigerated medications in a dedicated medication refrigerator, never alongside food.
How it is recorded
A Medication Administration Record per resident: every drug, dose, route and time, the initials of whoever gave it, and any refusal, missed dose or adverse reaction.
Physician orders
Every medication is backed by a current written physician order. Verbal orders are signed by the prescriber within seven days.
Packaging
Unit-dose packaging wherever the pharmacy can supply it, because it makes an error easier to catch.
If something goes wrong
Errors go to the Director of Nursing immediately, the physician within 24 hours, and the family. Any error causing harm is reported to VDSS within 24 hours. This is written into policy, not left to judgement.

If things change

What happens when something changes

Needs rarely stay still. This is the sequence, and where your family sits in it.

  1. Someone notices

In a household of seven, a quieter appetite or a new unsteadiness shows up within a day.

  2. The nurse assesses

The Director of Nursing assesses on any change of condition, and reviews weights and vital signs weekly with a full wellness check monthly.

  3. The physician is brought in

We coordinate directly with the resident's own primary care physician.

  4. The care plan is rewritten

The Individualised Service Plan is updated on any significant change — not held until the annual review.

  5. You are part of it

Family partnership is a stated core value, and the plan carries a resident or family signature.

  6. If needs outgrow our licence

We say so, give written notice, help identify a suitable setting, and transfer records, medication and belongings.

Staying connected

You should not have to wonder how she is doing

In a house of seven, family communication is not a newsletter. It is the same handful of people, reachable.

You help write the care plan
An Individualised Service Plan is drawn up within seven days of admission and carries a resident or family signature. It is reviewed at least annually and on any significant change.
Clinical questions reach the nurse
Our Director of Nursing leads care planning and coordinates directly with each resident's primary care physician, any specialists involved, and the family.
Medication errors are disclosed to you
Written into the policy, not left to discretion.
Emergencies within four hours
For any significant emergency.
Complaints run on a clock
Acknowledged within 24 hours, investigated within five business days, answered in writing within ten. Retaliation against anyone who complains is grounds for termination.
The month ahead, in advance
A monthly activity calendar is posted and given to every resident and family.

Visiting

  • Residents have the right to receive visitors of their choosing.
  • Recommended visiting hours are 9:00am to 8:00pm; outside those hours with a little notice.
  • Children are welcome. Under-12s stay with an adult.
  • Visitors sign in and out, so we always know who is in the house.
