Questions families ask

Straight answers, while we prepare the home

If your question is not here, ask it. We would rather answer honestly than have you guess.

Opening and licensing

Not yet. We are pre-licensure and completing the building phase. We are keeping a list of families who want to hear first, and we will contact that list before we announce an opening publicly.

Care and memory support

Yes. We are being licensed to provide a safe, secure environment for residents with cognitive impairment, alongside residential and assisted living care. We can support mild to moderate dementia. We are not able to accept residents whose behaviours would endanger themselves, other residents or staff.

No. We are an assisted living residence. We can provide personal care, medication administration and health monitoring, but not 24-hour skilled nursing, IV therapy or ventilator support. If a resident's needs grow beyond our licence, we help the family find an appropriate next setting.

A member of the care team is on site around the clock, including overnight, with awake coverage through the night — so there is never a period when a resident would have to wait for someone to arrive. Staffing levels for each shift are set against residents' assessed needs and our planned capacity of seven, and we go through them with you in detail during a consultation.

No. Virginia Legacy is a restraint-free environment by policy — no physical restraints, no chemical restraints, and side rails are not used as restraints. Agitation, wandering and anxiety are met first with person-centred technique, changes to the environment, meaningful activity and family involvement. Medication for behavioural symptoms is a last resort, documented, physician-ordered, and disclosed to the family.

Because our application seeks licensure for both residential and assisted living care, a resident whose needs increase does not automatically have to move. Care plans are reviewed and adjusted. If needs eventually exceed our licence, we give written notice and assist with finding an appropriate placement and transferring records.

Money

Fees are all-inclusive and depend on the room and the assessed level of care, so we discuss them directly rather than publishing a figure that may not fit your situation. There is no entry fee, founder's fee or life-lease payment. Every family receives a full written Disclosure Statement of services and fees before admission.

Daily life

Residents have the right to receive visitors of their choosing. Recommended visiting hours are 9:00am to 8:00pm, and outside those hours with a little notice. Children are welcome, with under-12s accompanied by an adult. Visitors sign in and out so we always know who is in the house.

Yes. Diabetic, low-sodium, soft, pureed and gluten-free diets are standard, and cultural and religious food preferences are honoured. Our menu cycle is reviewed by a consulting registered dietitian.

Staying informed

For any significant emergency, families are notified within four hours. Medication errors are disclosed to the family as a matter of written policy. Complaints are acknowledged within 24 hours, investigated within five business days and answered in writing within ten. Retaliation against anyone who raises a concern is grounds for termination.

Using this site

Please do not send medical records, diagnoses, medication lists or any other sensitive health information through the contact form. It is an informational enquiry form, not a clinical or admissions intake system. We will arrange a secure way to share clinical details when the time comes.
